The Bay X-Ray

Welcome to The Bay X Ray – training courses dedicated to dental radiography.

All training courses listed comply with the requirements set down in the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. Whether you want training in dental radiography, cone beam CT or as a Radiation Protection Supervisor, you will find it all in one place.

Certificate in Dental Imaging (Level 3)

This course includes CBCT as standard and is ideal for dental nurses wishing to become Cone Beam CT operators as well as general dental radiography. It is also available to nurses who do not have access to a Cone Beam scanner with the option to substitute the required views with panoramic radiographs. All students will cover the theory of this modern modality which gives good preparation to those yet to have CBCT facilities should the opportunity later arise to take CBCT scans.

Award in Cone Beam CT (Level 2)

This is a programme aimed at dental care professionals who hold a recognised certificate in dental radiography and wish to extend their knowledge to allow them to take images using CBCT equipment. This course contains information surrounding the legislation, safety and uses of Cone Beam technology however the practical application should be conducted in the workplace and supervised by a suitably trained individual. This course is run over a maximum of 8 weeks. This course should be completed in conjunction with practical training specific to your CBCT unit and allows the DCP to act as an operator for the taking of Cone Beam images. Such training should be carried out by the manufacturer of the unit or a representative who themselves have had such training. The course meets all training recommendations as provided in the FGDP Guidance Notes 2020.

Continuing Professional Development

Following initial training as a radiography operator, it is necessary to ensure you complete at least 5 hours per cycle of enhanced CPD in radiation protection and radiography. If you are also a CBCT operator then one hour of this must include CPD specific to cone beam CT.

Public Health England and the College of General Dentistry (formerly FGDP) have set minimum training guidelines for those wishing to work with CBCT. While these guidelines are not Law, regulators such as the General Dental Council expect them to be followed.

It is therefore the responsibility of the student to ensure all required CPD is completed once certified as competent to undertake all dental imaging types.
