Course title: Award in Fluoride Application
This course is aimed at dental nurses who wish to apply fluoride varnish, on prescription, as part of oral health advice or dental treatment needs.

Structure: The course is delivered by way of three modules. All modules are mandatory.
Grading: Pass or fail
Pre-requisites: Candidates must hold, or be working toward, a recognised Oral Health Education qualification.
Course fee: £125.00 – including VAT at 20%.
Assessment:

This course is assessed by:

  • Workplace portfolio of experience
  • Essay submission
  • Multiple choice test

Candidates must achieve a pass in all modules to gain the qualification.

Resit Arrangements:

Candidates can receive a small course extension to amend or change any information in the workplace portfolio or essay submissions.

Candidates get two attempts at the online multiple choice questions.

Workplace Portfolio of Evidence

This contains evidence of 10 patient cases where fluoride application has been done as part of dental treatment or oral health education.

The portfolio should include at least one patient from each group:

  • Pre school children
  • Children aged 5-12 years
  • Teenagers
  • Adults
  • Elderly

 

Case studies

One case should be expanded into a case study which should include information of the full treatment plan that fluoride application is part of. Word count 1000 – 1500 words.

 

Multiple Choice Questions

At the end of the final module, candidates will be required to pass a short multiple choice test on all subjects covered. This is 20 minutes in duration and consists of 15 questions. It can be taken at anytime following course completion, and is done online. Candidates get one resit opportunity should they not attain 75% on their first attempt. If the second attempt is also unsuccessful, this will result in a fail for the whole course.

  • Maintain confidentiality and data protection policies as per the workplace and legislative requirements
  • Maintain efficient health and safety and cross infection control procedures and work safely

  • Demonstrate safe working practice during the application of fluoride
  • Demonstrate good cross infection control before, during and after an appointment for fluoride application
